Sponsorship
Sponsorship is of great benefit to Light In Africa as it brings in a monthly amount of funds to cover the overall care of the children, the expenses of the staff teams wages, the weekly food shopping bill, the utility bills, the petrol for the vehicles and all clothing, education and medical expenses. As you may imagine for 150+ children and 50+ staff this is a huge amount of funds to find on a monthly basis.
Child Sponsorship
Sponsoring a child has many benefits. It undoubtly helps LIA to provide for the child on a daily basis but it also helps with emergency medical care or treatments (all medical help has to be paid for), it also helps with providing the child with school uniforms and essential pens, pencils, books and food for the schools which every child has to contribute no matter what their home circumstances.
The contact you have with the child is your choice, if you wish to write to the child you will receive a reply, you will also receive Christmas cards and general newsletters. Mama Lynn regularly updates her blogg page on the LIA web site.
There is no set fee for sponsoring a child and no contract. Just an appreciation of you giving an amount you feel comfortable with for as long as you like. Sponsorship money is paid direct in to the Light In Africa account.
Staff salary sponsorship
For the staff of Light In Africa receiving their wage doesn’t just provide for their immediate family but for many it also provides for extended family members. Many of the staff team have nieces and nephews living with them, mainly due to the Aids virus taking the lives of so many adults. A huge expense is secondary education and vocational training which takes a large chunk of staff wages as well as every day living expenses. This sponsorship is very much needed and appreciated as with the child sponsorship there is no set fee and no contract. Generally a staff wage will be between 50 - 100 pound per month, details can be given on individual staff on request. Again this sponsorship will be paid direct to Light In Africa’s account.
Adopt a grandad / grandma
The elderly are a section of the community who are hit by the Aids virus not physically but socially and economically. Many abandoned and homeless elderly people LIA supports have witnessed the death of their children and grandchildren mainly through the Aids virus or associated problems, this has left many elderly people with houses in desperate need of repair or land unable to be worked as there is no one to help. Socially Aids is a taboo subject and limited help is given to the elderly with no living relatives to support them.
LIA through it’s out reach programs identify those elderly people in need and gives them a roof over their head, a bed, mattress, blanket and mosquito net and food support. It also gives a home to those in desperate need with no viable family or neighbourly support at all.
Sponsoring a grandma or granddad is a rewarding sponsorship as you will be helping to provide the basic fundamental needs for an elderly person to maintain dignity for his / her remaining days.
LIA general running costs
Light In Africa has many monthly outgoings all of which any donation towards is greatly appreciated.
Calcium tablets for Massai children
Nations Together works with Light In Africa’s medical and social work team to provide calcium tablets on a monthly basis to an identified group of Massai children in a specific area where a combination of poor diet and water containing an unhealthy amount of fluoride produces a vitamin C and E deficiency. This results in many bone deformities. A simple course of calcium tablets will help to maintain healthy bones and deter the effects of the fluoride.
Secondary Education School Fees
Secondary Education School Fees is essential to the education of Tanzanians school children, many of managed to pass their secondary education examination and are let down by high school fees and no way of paying them. This is an important sponsorship program to help the next generation get out the cycle of poverty that so many of them are in through no fault of their own. A full year’s tuition and accommodation would be around 4/500 pound per year.
Vocational training
For those who have failed wither primary or secondary education there is the opportunity to attend some sort of vocational training giving the child a skill that they can earn an honest living from. Again very important for the future generation of Tanzania and helping to reduce the number of street kids who many have no choice to resort to stealing or prostitution to survive.

Pay for a operation / post care
There are many people who are living with painful conditions that could be rectified by a simple operation. Many struggle to find food for today so finding a large amount of money for an operation is unthinkable. So they learn to live with the daily pain and restrictions that it brings.
To support a hernia or cleft palette operation it would cost around 60 pound. To provide a child with rickets a life changing operation it would cost just 3 / 400 pound. This does make a difference to the lives of the individual, for many they can go back out to work and provide for their families, not only is this a remarkable gift physically but emotionally and spiritually and gives back self esteem. Wonderful.
Buy a cow, pig, chickens
Buying some livestock for a family can be a life saver - literally- if you provide a family with something that they can rear to produce more, this can transform a families standard of living as they then have livestock to either eat or sell.
Buy a vehicle for LIA ‘s Out Reach Programs
Vehicles are very much in great need of to support the many out reach programs that LIA offers to the communities. Some days there are 3 or 4 projects going on and vehicles are needed to support the growing demand of the work that is carried out. For a 4by4 vehicle it would cost between £5 -£8.000 obviously the more funds donated the better the vehicle to be purchased.
Buy children’s school uniforms
With over 150 children in the full time care of LIA and many street children supported there are many school uniforms that need purchasing. A uniform for a primary school child will cost £20.00 and a secondary school uniform will cost £30.00
